Day 2 Tues- Cappelle Medicee, food market, lunch, Accademia Gallery

DAY 2  A morning lecture by Prof Giovanni Guidetti introduced us to the Renaissance and to Michelangelo, his genius and relationship to the town of Florence.   The Renaissance, or rebirth of classical learning, culture, and sentiment, shaped the Christian ethos with its emphasis on beauty, harmony and human dignity.  It was an age of optimism and confidence.  As northern humanist Erasmus famously said, "Man is the measure of all things."

After the lecture, we walked through the nearby Central Food Market of San Lorenzo and to lunch at Palazzo Gaddi Restaurant.  Afterwards we visited the Cappelle Medicee at the Basilica di San Lorenzo  and afterwards the Accademia Gallery where Michelangelo's David and "unfinished" sculptures are exhibited.
